Abortion: Republicans Hate Planned Parenthood — And Women

By N Oji Mzilikazi

20 February 2016

The fight by women for rights and gender equality has been an extremely long and slow struggle – and still continues to be. And while we in the West take pride in our democratic principles, highly tout and value our many freedoms, there is not a country in the world where women are not oppressed, disadvantaged and face “glass ceilings.”

Increasingly, women’s gains and women rights are under siege by patriarchies rooted in the past; males that long for the glory days when women were chattel, women “knew their place,” and men had territorial rights over a woman’s body. To that end, they seek refuge in religious dogma and use the same as authority and divine justification.

In America, the Republican Party, its slate of elected law makers and their presidential candidates are foremost in the charge to reverse women’s hard won reproductive rights.

So myopic — and desperate are Republicans to uphold their anti-abortion ideology, they willingly and gladly spread half-truths, engage in in deliberate contextual misrepresentation, make false associations, abandon facts, reason, as well as common sense to advance their cause.

Disingenuously, maliciously and slanderously, New Jersey Governor and Republican presidential contender Chris Christie said that Planned Parenthood “engages in the systematic murder of children in the womb, in order to maximize the value of their body parts for sale on the open market.”

To raise funds and find favour with the electorate, Carly Fiorina, the only female Republican candidate for the White House deliberately  misrepresented the images and descriptions in an anti-abortion video.

The video used “images and videos spliced from unrelated events, one of which depicts a miscarriage not an abortion.” Still, Fiorina “dares” Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and others to watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.

Texas Republican assemblywoman Shannon Grove attributed rain falling on drought-stricken Texas to the abortion restrictions signed by the governor.

Sheila Butt, Republican floor leader in the Tennessee House of Representatives blocked an amendment to an anti-abortion bill that would have created an exemption for victims of rape and incest, by asserting of all things, such cases are too difficult to confirm.  Really?

A female articulating such speaks volumes about the depth of indoctrination as well as internalization of Republican anti-abortion ideology.

The extremism and idiocy over abortion is such, Kenlissia Jones, 23, of Albany, Georgia was arrested and jailed on murder charge for taking abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy.

Florida Senator and Republican presidential contender Marco Rubio is an extremely proud anti-abortion hardliner. He believes there should not be exceptions for rape or incest and is willing to lose the election/votes for his stance.

Eight days before the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado that killed three persons and wounded nine others, Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz hailed an anti-abortion extremist who wants abortion providers executed.

Kentucky Senator and Republican presidential contender Rand Paul opposition and hatred of abortion is such, he stated in a January 2016 GOP presidential debate, “The more states that make abortion illegal, the better.”

As detailed recently in Mic, “The majority of low-income women consider family planning centers like Planned Parenthood their primary healthcare provider.” Yet, as far as Republicans are concerned, Planned Parenthood is a bastion of evil that must be totally eradicated.

Chris Christie boasted about having vetoed Planned Parenthood funding five times out of the New Jersey budget. In Jeb Bush first year as Florida governor, the Republican presidential contender signed a law creating a “Choose Life” license plate.

Rick Allgeyer, director of research at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission co-authored a study suggesting that cuts to Planned Parenthood are restricting access to women’s health care statewide.

The backlash from Republican leaders was immediate. Republican state Senator Jane Nelson, an architect of Texas’ current women’s health program dismissed the findings as biased and invalid.

If Republicans have their way, they would strip all funding from Planned Parenthood.

They have repeatedly tried to get it done like here, here, and here, and remain unceasing in their efforts.

Republicans hate Planned Parenthood, Republicans hate women.

Anti-Abortionists: Which God Do They Serve?

By N Oji Mzilikazi

2 February 2016

Two weeks after posting, The Sermon was Anti-Abortion. I support Abortion Rights, a gunman stormed a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Colorado killing three people and wounding nine others.

When the killer appeared in court, he defended the planned attack with, “I’m a warrior for the babies.”

In July 2015, anti-abortion activists posted videos online purporting to show the organization’s employees discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue, which is illegal in the United States if done for a profit.  Shortly thereafter — within 74 days, four Planned Parenthood clinics were firebombed.

A grand jury cleared Planned Parenthood of misusing fetal tissue — and instead indicted the makers of undercover video.

Planned Parenthood clinics are more than abortions. They provide healthcare for women and that includes preventative service like cancer screenings. They also providing birth control so females could enjoy the joys of sex without fear of its culmination in pregnancy.

Any attack against Planned Parenthood/healthcare clinics that serve women is an attack against the female gender; mothers, wives and daughters.

So adamant are anti-abortionist extremists about the sacredness of human life, they have bombed clinics that perform the procedure causing death and injury to patients, staff and passers-by. They have also killed doctors, attempted to kill doctors  as well as threatened to kill doctors that perform abortions.

As we saw in the killing of Dr. George R. Tiller, security cameras, bulletproof glass, armed guards, an armoured S.U.V. and a bulletproof vest do no protect anyone from any anti-abortionist extremist with pure murderous intent. Dr. Tiller was shot in the head at point-blank range while ushering at church.

In their zeal to save a foetus, whose future as a person is unknown, anti-abortion extremists feel that it’s okay to destroy an already productive life. What logic!

I truly believe that life is sacred. But can anyone explain to me how an unborn foetus can have more rights than the woman who is unwilling to carry it?

In civil society, in most western societies, women are no longer the property — of their husbands or fathers. Yet, the Church/religious ideology and by extension anti-abortionists remain hell bent on maintaining, exerting ownership over a woman’s womb, as well as keeping the female as a slave to her womb.

Since the receptacle that sustains and births life reside in the female, the female is the true and sole owner of her womb. And since the female is the one to experience the physical and physiological changes that pregnancy engenders, the decision to have a baby or abort must reside with her. Not even the man whose sperm caused the pregnancy and who loves her dearly has the right to decide if she should or shouldn’t have an abortion.

Just as the umbilical cord carries nutrients to the developing child, the mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual state of the pregnant female contributes to a child’s wholeness or lack.

If a mother is under tremendous stress, or a child is unloved in the womb, the resultant negative thoughts and feelings are transmitted to the foetus and become part of that child’s personality. The hated/unloved child is psychologically scarred and damaged long before birth.

Must society allow carrying a foetus to full term the penalty for unprotected sex, rape or unintended or unexpected pregnancy?

The US Surgeon General’s January 2001 report, from the Children’s Mental Health Conference, stated that maternal depression affects a child’s development, and 1 in 10 children and adolescents suffer from severe mental illness causing some level of impairment.

The report revealed that 80% of children with emotional, behavioural and developmental needs were not being treated, and in many cases end up in special education classes, the juvenile justice system or on welfare.

Single-parenting, in spite of numerous studies detailing its harm is commonplace. Youths that come before the juvenile or criminal justice system are overwhelmingly raised in a single parent household headed by a female. And more often than not, judges berate the absentee father culture and negligence of the mother for their waywardness and/or criminality. Yet, anti-abortionists are willing to perpetuate a beeline from the womb to incarceration.

When a woman who is not the victim of a rape decides to seek an abortion, it’s more than likely she is not emotionally, physically, mentally, financially, and/or spiritually prepared to have a child.

Children need quality nurturing, a safe, loving and healthy environment for optimum development, to maximize their potential, to healthily navigate the world with all its disappointments and setbacks, and overall, to be “good” citizens.  Group homes/State run centers for children can and will never be fertile ground for the said children.

In 2002, the Quebec Association of Youth Centres produced a portrait of the children in, or was part of the foster-care institution.

Findings were they were five times more likely to have a run in with the police and to have alcoholic or drug problems; 1 in 3 tried to commit suicide, compared with 1 in 10 in other teens; 2 out of 3 have difficulty in school compared to 1 in 4 of other youngsters; 1 in 4 was a victim of sexual abuse; and 71% were living on welfare a decade after they turn 18.

Is being a potential/future ward of the State preferable to an abortion?

The decision to have an abortion is often rooted in economics. The financial health of the parent(s) often affect outcomes.

The very nature of the all-powerful parent and dependant and defenceless child set the stage for a child (children) to be ignored, neglected, abused, exploited, and to suffer. Especially, when poverty makes living and earning a living hell.

There are nations wherein parents sell their children to pimps or the rich, parents sell their daughter’s virginity — to eat, and where the child sex/pedophilia industry is a virtual sub-sector of their tourism industry, and where child abuse without fear of consequences brings Arab, western and Asian sex-tourists  — and foreign currency.

According to information provided to World Vision in 2011 by the Philippine ambassador to the United States, forty per cent of male tourists who travel to the Philippines go there for sexual purposes.

Universally, many crimes against children including sexual violence and sexual exploitation are overlooked and go unpunished.

Japan is addicted to child porn. As detailed in the Indepenent, Japan “is the only OECD (Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development) nation that has not banned possession of child porn, partly to protect its manga and anime industries.”

The article also revealed, “The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations give Japan’s police hundreds of tips on child pornography makers and distributors every year and none of them are acted upon.”

Lest we think ourselves better or superior, child abuse, the sexual grooming of children, the sexual exploitation of children, child prostitution and child trafficking for the purposes of prostitution are a plague in western nations.

In October 2009, the FBI launched Cross Country IV, a three-day operation in 36 cities that targeted organised crime, gangs and individuals engaged in child prostitution and child trafficking for the purposes of prostitution. It  led to nearly 700 arrests. One of the 52 children rescued was a 10-year-old.

FBI raids in more than 70 cities across America in July 2013 rescued 105 teenage victims of sex trafficking and exploitation. 150 pimps were arrested.

Most of the victims were between the ages of 13 and 17. The youngest victim was 9 years old.

Child abuse, the sexual exploitation of children and child trafficking that all rob children of their childhood is a far better cause célèbre than anti-abortion.

Violence solves nothing. Destroying productive lives to save one that could end up being evil personified is counter-productive.

Sex-education as well as access to birth control are the most logical ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduce abortions.

Sex education with the emphasis on sexual responsibility ought to be compulsory in schools. Then and only then are teenagers going to have the inner understand that a child is much more than the terminus of love, attraction, going around with someone or to facilitate the fanciful and abstract appeal of being father or mother.

When people are able to embrace conception as an act of deliberation, the cycle of poverty, child neglect, child abuse, child abandonment, and children becoming a ward of the state is on the way to being broken.

Making adoptions easier, expanding adoption programs, as well as financial support for pregnant women so they could afford to have their babies, not to mention affordable daycare would also contribute to a reduction in abortions.

Given the financial shortfall plaguing municipalities, governments, charitable organizations, and steadily increasing cost of housing, as well as education … It’s purely lip service to children being a precious resource, society’s future, and so on.

As previously stated: “Pro-life/anti-abortionist forces are willing to do battle with those that perform abortion, those that advocate a woman’s right to choose, and those contemplating or seeking an abortion. It would be honourable, if when their intervention prevented an abortion, they will, after the birth of the child offer moral, physical and financial support to those who might be in need of them. But that is not their interest. Theirs is about bringing life into the world even if one lacks the means to provide for him/her.”

Is that what any God of Mercy and Love would want?

The Sermon Was Anti-Abortion. I Support Abortion Rights

By N Oji Mzilikazi

11 November 2015

I attended mass at my neighbourhood English Catholic Church last Saturday (November 7). It was years since my last attendance… I was open-minded and open-hearted — until the priest got into an anti-abortion tirade…I mean sermon.

I support Planned Parenthood as well as abortion rights.

I was also riled when a white female parishioner refused to shake my hand when it was time for the congregation to shake hands with one another in the spirit/display of fellowship.

It was not the first time a white person in church refrained; refused to shake hands with me. But I thought those days were long over.

Some twenty-five plus years ago, a white parishioner refused to shake hands with my deceased mother-in-law who was here on vacation.  Bold and outspoken, she would have none of it. My mother-in-law snatched the woman’s hand saying, “Give me yuh damn hand,” and shook it to “die kingdom come.”

The refusal surprised, shocked, irked. As I watched the old lady walk down the aisle to receive communion I thought “Christians like her makes it easy for people to lose faith or be drawn to other and/or more dangerous/extremist ideologies.”

While the priest rallied against abortion, my thoughts flew to the recent series of scandal to hit the Vatican.

In the spirit of “taking the mote out of one eyes rather than pointing fingers at others with one,” thoughts of the entrenched culture of Church pedophilia and homosexuality bombarded my mind; that in every nation wherein there is a Catholic Church there is documentary evidence of the sexual abuse of children, manly boys by its priests; that the Church has been a sustainer, nurturer and breeding ground for pedophilia; and that the founders of so many Catholic orders were pedophiles.

The pedophilia of the clergy, including non-Catholic clergy is a far more serious issue than abortion.

Abortion is a procedure between a doctor and patient. No one else is affected. Its scars (if any) reside squarely on the shoulders of the female and no other. Plus, an abortion does not hinder or detract from someone living well and being successful.

Like rape, sexual abuse and pedophilia permanently scars. The scaring inhibits one’s ability to trust, love, be affable, have open and honest relationships, and lead to all sorts of self-destructive behaviour.

The sexual abuse of children damage and affect not just the individual, but his/her family and society.

Sexual abuse puts victims on a collision course with addiction, mental illness, aggressive and violent behavior, promiscuity, prostitution, porn, inability to hold down a job, and homelessness. Furthermore, victims of sexual abuse and pedophilia can so internalise the damage; feel their experience is normal and become abusers and pedophiles themselves.

The crime of pedophilia is worse than that associated with abortion. Sexual abuse of children by those that wear the robes of sanctity is most heinous because it erodes trust, faith, and belief that there is a god.

Religious objection to abortion is centered on the Biblical mandate: “Go forth and multiply!”

Then, the earth was sparsely populated, and filled with unlimited resources ripe for exploitation. Employment, self-industriousness, adventures and dangerous quests to seek fortunes were there for the taking. One could, to use the phrase, “Breed like rabbits,” and it wouldn’t be a problem per se. It’s a different story today.

Mankind can no longer afford to be injudicious about procreation or justify uncontrolled reproduction as per the aforementioned Biblical mandate. The world currently hovers on the brink of overpopulation. There is also the overexploitation of its resources.

The culture wrought by technology and modernity has not only brought irreversible changes to every facet of human life, but created employment scarcity as well. They also have us on a collision course with self-destruction.

Many by-products of our industrial and technological advances are toxic, carcinogenic and non-biodegradable. Non-biodegradable products, toxic, nuclear and chemical waste cannot be destroyed. Storage sites and sites of contamination destroy resources as well as shrink space.

Wanton disregard for the environment along with its contamination have diminished green space, animal habitats, and resources. Consequently, we are now saddled with unusable land, bodies of water we cannot drink, fish, or swim in, numerous plants, marine, and animal genus extinct, and much more on the verge of extinction, and fresh clean water under tremendous stress.

The “needs” of an ever-growing population, coupled with the built in obsolesce/throw away of things and extravagant lifestyle as normal, not to mention the energy and electricity technology and industry demand further exacerbate the overtaxing of land and marine resources. Shortages are only a matter of time. In many parts of America depleted aquifers/water shortages are a huge and growing problem.

In this age of robotics, widespread computerization and outsourcing, multiplying has greater economic, environmental and social implications than ever before in the history of the world.

Unchecked population growth in the face of employment scarcity will exacerbate poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, short-tempers and violence, and increase criminality and crime. Factor in diminished government revenue and resources to service the basic needs of the population, and therein is a recipe for civil unrest.

Our health care system is busting at the seams. More and more people are getting sick, dying from new illness and new diseases, and we haven’t been able to cure old ones. Obesity is an epidemic. The huge aging population has an assortment of health needs. Procreation is thus serious, very serious business.

As if the earth has inexhaustible and easily renewable resources, and employment, food and water are there for the taking, countless persons including the religious and special interests groups oppose family planning at home and abroad, contraception, and abortion, even in cases of rape.

Pope John Paul II in The Apostolic Exhortation on the Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World, states: “The Church firmly believes that human life, even if weak and suffering is always a splendid gift of God’s goodness.”

The words are beautiful and sound nice, but none who has ever come in contact with the pain, suffering and deaths of innocent children from starvation, preventable diseases or from being born into a war-torn country could interpret damaged and destroyed lives – limbs amputated to save bullets, as blessings from God.

There are parts of the world where women have no control over their womb. Men have territorial rights to women’s bodies. Women have no say on how many children they are going to have. Women have no access to birth control technologies. And rape is a weapon of war.

When there is drought, ethnic conflicts over resources, civil unrest, sectarian violence or war, it’s the children and women that suffer. Their faces we see on television. Then, those that oppose birth control blame their “primitivism” for their condition, silently wonder why those women, already poor, continue to pop babies, and are the first ones to complain about the aid given to “those” irresponsible and backwards folks.

None of those opposed to birth control are ever in the frontlines experiencing the pain, poverty, lack of opportunities, inadequate health-care, and variety of treatable illness/sicknesses that often lead to death in other countries. Nor do they live day in or day out with a child who witnessed the horror of war, is a victim, an amputee, ex-child soldier, or suffered physical, sexual, mental and emotional abuse. But they can sure flap their gums and invoke God.

God has naught to do with procreation. Procreation is all about man and woman sleeping with one another.

As advanced is our economy, educated is our population, and skilled is our workforce, we have huge pockets of illiteracy and poverty, and their attendant ills continue to be recycled.

The foster care/group home/social services system, youth protection, juvenile detention centers, prisons, porn industry, gangs and the streets are busting at their seams with males and females who were loved, conceived in love, conceived accidently, and who, as infants and children, were cute, handsome, beautiful, and loving. So imagine the life trajectory of an unwanted and unloved child.

Children suffer when parents are unprepared, ill-equipped, financially incapable of supporting themselves and a child, and a child come into the world unloved, unwanted, and by accident – because passion got the better of a couple.

We need to stop conceiving children by accident, even when married. Accidents, as everyone knows, can result in scarring, injuries, permanent injury and death. Also, we need to stop conceiving children in the belief that God will help provide for them.

Far too many children suffer from God not coming down to provide for them, and to protect them from parental anger, abuse, neglect, predators that prey on the innocent and the ills engendered by poverty.

Much of the abortion debate centers on when is a foetus to be considered a living human being.  To me the most important concern should be at what period of gestation it is unsafe to perform an abortion.

Pro-life/anti-abortionist forces are willing to do battle with those that perform abortion, those that advocate a woman’s right to choose, and those contemplating or seeking an abortion. It would be honourable, if when their intervention prevented an abortion, they will, after the birth of the child offer moral, physical and financial support to those who might be in need of them. But that is not their interest. Theirs is about bringing life into the world even if one lacks the means to provide for him/her.

Since the female is the one that bears the human child, women deserve easy access to birth control technologies, the right to plan their families, and the right to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires.

Abortions ought to be a female right, as well as made accessible to women.

Abortion is never an easy decision for any woman to make (Women that have had abortions have spoken of the psychological scar it leaves – a memory they live with for the rest of their life.), but it is a right every woman deserves. Consequently, the right to abortion should be legally protected.

To those that oppose abortion I say, “If Adolf Hitler’s mother had an abortion, the industrial slaughter of six million Jews would not have taken place.”
